Spanish Demonstratives

The English demonstrative adjective this is translated by the Spanish este.

That is translated by ese and that (over there/further away) is translated by aquel.

Ese refers to something near the person being spoken to. Aquel refers to something further away.

Like other adjectives, they agree with the noun they qualify in gender and number but they come in front of the noun.

Their forms are :

masculine singular feminine singular
esteeseaquelestaesaaquella

masculine plural feminine plural
estos esos aquellos estas esas aquellas

This one, that one, those, these, etc (as pronouns) are translated by the same words as above only they are spelt with an é : éste, ése, aquél.

The neuter forms esto/eso/aquello are used when no particular noun is being referred to.
